YORKSHIRE AND HUMBER ASSOCIATION OF CIVIC SOCIETIES (YHACS) 2022

Doncaster Civic Trust hosted the YORKSHIRE AND HUMBER ASSOCIATION OF CIVIC SOCIETIES (YHACS) at the Danum Gallery Library and Museum, Doncaster’s new state of the art new building which had been recently opened. The building encompasses the Old High school for Girls which had been built in 1910.

Prior to the event on the Saturday, the chair Kevin Trickett has hosted an event at the Earl of Doncaster for those members who were arriving on the Friday. A good choice as Art Deco is Kevin Trickett’s special topic of interest .

Despite the rail strike on the Saturday, the event was well attended.

Before the formal meeting took place, members were given a tour of the new building and treated to refreshments provided by the 1910 Café based in the building.
The tour included the Art Gallery, where they were shown the winning entries from a recent Art and Photographic competition run by the Doncaster Civic Trust.

A visit to see the two steam engines the Green Arrow and Engine 251 housed on the bottom floor of the building and finally a visit to the gardens to the rear of the building to see the Lion and Pillar, which had recently been restored after spending over a century in the nearby Regent Square.

After the tour, the formal business at hand commenced with an introduction by Kevin Trickett, the chair of YHACS, welcoming the members and on behalf of YHACS, Kevin thanked Doncaster Civic Trust for organising the meeting, refreshments and lunch.

John Holmes, Chair of the Doncaster Civic Trust then welcomed members to Doncaster, which had recently been awarded city status. John had represented the Doncaster Civic Trust when he was invited to meet with King Charles at the signing ceremony for the new City charter. John Holmes welcomed us all to Doncaster followed by a welcome from the Civic Mayor Councillor Ian Pearson. He was very enthusiastic of his role and thoroughly enjoyed meeting and greeting the many people of the town (now a city) and its’ visitors. Doncaster was a welcoming vibrant city in which he was proud to serve.

John had earlier met with the Guest Speaker Tariq Shah, OBE, Director of the Vigo Group who had played a primary role in getting Doncaster, its city status. Tariq is Doncaster born he explained how detailed the programme of involvement in order to promote Doncaster, to achieve City Status.

After the meeting, members were also treated to further refreshments before they headed back to their respective Civic Society homes.
