Lockwood House

Joseph Lockwood the Younger built this house before 1823.    Unlike other houses in the street the frontage was built of dressed stone. . The Lockwoods operated the Levitt Hagg quarries so would have used their own stone. They also had a brick and tile works at Sandall so would use their own bricks for the back of the house.
Most of his sculptures are in local churches, many in the form of tablets,  including Barnby Dun, Campsall and Bawtry.   He created a  'mural'  memorial to Admiral Sotheron in Darrington Parish church.  This is mentioned in the current Pevsner, the architectural guide.
He undertook other work too, notably  a sculpture of a figure of Britannia entitled 'Celebration of the Peace' in 1814.  Everyone thought the war was at an end at the time but Napoleon's escape and the Battle of Waterloo followed in 1815.  Its whereabouts are unknown.
