Protecting Bawtry’s Heritage Video

Doncaster Civic Trust was approached by Bawtry Town Council regarding the Bawtry Market Cross.

The monument is a late medieval or early post-medieval market cross located at the south end of the market place in Bawtry.

The obelisk is approximately 4m high and comprises a 1m high rectangular base with a pedestal and capital,

above which is a tapering octagonal shaft which is reputed to have been used as a lamp standard at some stage though this is no longer the case.

The Town Council wanted to protect the Market Cross, whose position made it potentially vulnerable to damage from parked cars,

since there was no barrier to how close the cars could park next to the cross.
They wanted to enhance the settings of the cross and protect it by creating a safe area between the Cross and parked cars.

The Trust pledged £2000 towards the costs, and now the Cross stands in its own protected area.
