Dr Edward Miller

Dr Miller, was appointed organist of St George’s Minster Doncaster in 1756 and continued in the post for 50 years. He resided at the Clergy House, Dr Miller moved to Church Hill, a house near to the old parish church, in 1765 and lived there for the rest of his life. This house was owned, not by the church, but by his first wife’s family. He had married Elizabeth Lee in 1763 and her father had owned the land on which the house was built. The house itself is probably of mid 18th century date. After Dr Miller’s death in 1807 his family inherited the house but later it was sold. Eventually the church purchased it in 1908. It is listed (Grade 2) as the Clergy House. St. George House It is now called St. George House but its original name of Church Hill could be seen on a stone gatepost until very recently. A Doncaster Civic Trust green plaque commemorates Dr Miller’s achievements.and is situated on the right-hand side of the Minster looking from the East.
